Page layout is an area of study and application of graphic design that deals with the distribution of visual elements on a page following rules of composition and communication. Designing a printed page constitutes a special type of information generating process by transforming a set of semi-structured data (notes, images and other graphic elements) into a set of printed pages where all elements have a contextualized relationship between each other in order to generate information. For the publishing industry, the design process follows certain fixed rules that are applied thanks to the acquired expertise of the employees. It constitutes the most critical stage since a delay in the approval of the designs generates pressures in the following stages. The present work develops and implements a decision support tool for the page layout design used in a section in two newspapers published by the company Página 24 in order to make the design process more efficient by automating certain empirical rules used by the designers during the process of creating the page layouts. This tool integrates a mathematical model arising from the classification and subsequent modelling of the different levels of rules applied to the page design, the use of an exact algorithm to solve the problem of satisfaction of constrains that arises and the application of the TOPSIS technique to classify the design alternatives generated through three design criteria: symmetry of notes, approximation to the golden ratio by the width to height ratio of the photographs, and symmetry of textual elements other than the body text. The output of this tool is a document in the format used by Página 24 for the following stages of the publication generation process.
